KOZHIKODE: The Kerala School Teachers Union (KSTU) has termed dangerous the changes being made in school textbooks in the guise of modernising the curriculum.
C.P. Cheriya Mohammed, president of the union, K. Sainuddheen, general secretary, and others told mediapersons here on Monday that a culture not in keeping with the educational traditions and beliefs of the people of the State was being imposed on children through the changes.
The Social Studies textbook published by the government recently was proof of such an attempt, the union alleged. The Social Studies curriculum at the primary level sought to create a student who questioned religious beliefs, dress habits and the like, it said.
The union was opposed to the spirit of the new Social Studies textbook to be introduced in Class VII, besides the oath recommended for administration on Environment Day.
It demanded that the textbooks, to which changes were allegedly made even without consulting the curriculum committee, be re-examined and withdrawn with immediate effect. The union threatened to launch protests against the move to entrust schools with panchayats through changes in the Kerala Educational Rules and any steps that would be detrimental to the interests of language teachers.
It will discuss in detail the impact of the changes in the textbooks at a leadership camp to be held at Thunchanparambu, Tirur, on May 30 and 31. As many as 150 representatives from the district are expected to participate.
