An earthmoving machine worked at Makdiya-Sangod in Mollem till late Saturday evening to excavate the remains of a teenage girl from Kerala, who was allegedly silenced to death in 2006.
And after a daylong search under the supervision of a team from Kerala police a thighbone of the girl was found. Till late evening some more bones were recovered from a four-metre pit, but the same could not be ascertained.
When contacted, SP K P Philip of Kerala Police, who was at the site, confirmed that a thighbone had been found and said the digging operation would continue again tomorrow.
According to reports, a civil contractor, Hamza, 42, brought the 14-year-old girl named Safiya from Kodagu to work as a domestic help at his residential place in Goa. She had disappeared from Hamza’s abode leaving behind many unanswered questions.
The girl’s parents had filed a complaint with the Kerala police after which NGOs and other organizations lent support to put sustained pressure on the police to investigate the case. Finally, after two years, the Crime sleuths of Kerala Police succeeded in solving the case and arrested Hamza and his wife for allegedly murdering the girl.
Hamza confessed he and Kerala teenager’s bones dug out
a relative cut the girl’s body into pieces on December 15, 2006 when she was alive and buried the same at a site where he was carrying out a civil contract. He went to Kasargod and spread a false story that Safiya went missing from his house.
Today, the Kerala team, along with the accused, was present at Makdiya-Sangod during the excavation. Hamza took the police to the spot where he had buried the girl.
Hamza told police he killed the girl because she suffered burn injuries after which her condition started deteriorating. Fearing that the girl’s condition would lead to the family’s detriment, Hamza cut Safiya’s body into pieces even as she was alive.
Sources very close to Hamza revealed to Herald that the accused had concocted a story on the girl’s death. It was true that she suffered burn injuries, but they were inflicted by the contractor, said the sources and added, “Hamza was having sexual relationship with the girl and she was suspected to be pregnant. That’s the reason he had to silence her.”
The sources revealed further, “a JCB excavator used to dig the earth where the girl’s hacked body parts were buried belongs to one C K Mohammed (also a PWD contractor) from Margao. But we don’t know whether Mohammed knew why he was excavating the place. He and Hamza were good friends.”
